Meet the Author: Sean E. Avery
Sean E Avery is a teacher, writer-illustrator, sculptor, and designer born in South Africa and currently living in Perth, Western Australia. He is known for his well-loved children’s picture books and for his sculptures using CDs and DVDs to create breathtaking works of art.

About the Book: Pumpkin Patch Panic! (Ducky the Spy)
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I was inspired by the idea of a big vegetable contest on the farm Ducky lives on – the rivalries it might inspire, the gadgets that could be used, and the opportunities for old foes to become new friends.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Donny definitely makes me laugh the most, but Ducky is the heart and soul of the series – I really enjoy writing his dialogue and drawing him.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel came first – we had a hard time picking ‘Pumpkin Patch Panic’ as the title. My favourite option was actually ‘Gourdzilla’, but I got voted down, haha.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
The scene where Donny and Ducky arrive back on scene to save Bubsy from the Cat Gang in the digging machine – I thought it worked out really nicely.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
Make books for the love of it. Don’t take it seriously. Push through when it’s boring. Celebrate the wins.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
Ducky rocking the awesome veg-big-inator ray.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2027?
I have two new graphic novel series and a picture book launching next year that I’m working on now… but can’t talk about yet.
YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?
Into the Bewilderness by Gus Gordon was brilliant – the best graphic novel I read last year by a long shot.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
Big things – if I get the small things right.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
Making and solving problems.
