one of the best picture books ive ever read. the pictures in this book really helped to even better depict this story. the story starts off in harlem at a funeral of a local boy. the main character throughout the story talks about his best friend, Rise, a lot and his "gang" i guess u can call it. Rise starts to drug deal and in the end an enemy of his shoots him dead just as he makes the decision to leave dangerous harlem. the story ends in the main character's drawing of him and his other friend walking from the funeral. i think that if you are not really a "reader" or "bookworm" that this book is the book for u because it has really great pictures. A great from myers:)

This book was so awesome. Itz the 1st picture book ive read that actually was a chapter book. I guess thts called a comic book but i still like it even tho i think comic books are really lame. Anyway the pictures in there jus gave me an unique view of the characters. The book gave me a visual of what the narrarator looked like and what his friend Rise looked like. Most books dont give you a visual, you end up having to picture the characters in your head. I thought it was really sad too:( But overall one of the best books ive ever read of Myers.
P.S. Anyone know if the illustrator is Myers brother?

This is the latest from Walter Dean Myers, who I think is a brilliant writer. This one incorporates graphic novel type illustrations, making it a bit of a hybrid something else I love. So why arent I head over heels in love with this book?

Mostly because the subject of the book is same ol same ol for Walter Dean Myers inner city kids, suddenly and they arent quite sure how, get mixed up in gang stuff and drug dealing and then somebody or somebodies die by gun violence. Its an important story, but Myers has done it, and done it well. The book is great, I will recommend it, but I was a bit disappointed just because the theme is somewhat overdone, at least by this author.
