Listening to Break Wide the Sea by Sara Holland was like being swept out to sea on a storm-tossed ship equal parts haunting, romantic, and utterly mesmerizing. From the first chapter, I was hooked by the atmosphere: the crash of waves, the whisper of curses, and the pulse of something ancient stirring beneath the surface.

Annie Fairfax is the kind of heroine I immediately rooted for fierce, flawed, and carrying the weight of a family legacy that’s as cursed as it is powerful. The idea of heartbreak literally turning someone into a monster is such a devastatingly poetic concept, and through the audiobook, I felt every beat of her struggle. Her desperation, her longing, and her quiet rage all came through so vividly in the narration that I kept catching myself holding my breath.

Sara Holland’s worldbuilding is lush and immersive an eerie maritime world where beauty and horror intertwine. The finfolk are both terrifying and tragic, and the moral grayness of hunting magical whales for survival adds this perfect touch of tension and complexity. And then there’s the love triangle: August, the ambitious fiancé with a dangerous edge, and Silas, the half-finfolk captain whose secrets ripple just beneath the surface. Their dynamic with Annie is layered and tense, with every moment on that ship charged with emotion and danger.

The audiobook narration was fantastic! The narrator captured the ocean’s rhythm in their pacing calm one moment, crashing the next. There’s something almost hypnotic about listening to this story aloud; it’s the kind of book that makes you want to close your eyes and just drift with the tide of the words.

By the time I reached the end, my heart felt both shattered and whole again. Break Wide the Sea is a darkly romantic tale about legacy, transformation, and the price of love perfect for listeners who crave emotional depth wrapped in salt and myth.
