Review Detail

One of my all time favorite characters has to be Thorn from Linda Joy Singleton's The Seer series. I was very excited to hear that Singleton was giving Thorn her own series! So when Buried came out, I rushed out and purchased it. Buried lives up to my expectations!

First off, I love how Thorn, alias Beth Ann, is not the stereotypical hard-core Goth chick which seems to be the norm in some YA fiction. Rather she's multi-layered. For example she loves to play her guitar and also does worry whether or not some of the new church goers will frown on her Gothness and cause her mother to lose her job. She's very loyal to her small circle of friends. She also happens to be a Finder, a person with the psychic ability to find things by touching an object. What's great is she's not always right on her first hunches on things. This kind of reminds me of a teen version of MEDIUM, that it might take Thorn a few times to figure things out.

I liked how the mystery unraveled throughout the story. I was surprised at the ending which is always a plus.

This is a great spin-off for fans of her Seer series. A few of those characters pop into this story too. There's also some new characters: Rune, her Goth friend who has daily weird tales she shares, Amerie, her friend who happens to wear fairy wings, K.C., a boarder who is like a brother to her, and Jay, who at first seems like the typical Prep boy but reveals himself to be much more.

I'm a huge fan of Singleton. Her characters are fleshed out with strengths and vulnerabilities that make them easy to relate with. I'm crossing my fingers that there will be another Goth Girl mystery soon.
