Court Duel (the sequel to Crown Duel) is a great book, and reminded me at one point or another of 'You've Got Mail', 'Pride and Prejudice' (Jane Austen), and 'Hero and the Crown' (Robin McKinley). In this story, Meliara Astiar, countess of Tlanth (but no longer destitute) goes to court with the motive of setting her brother up as king. She's caught up in a world of political intrigue where every word, every gesture, every smile has a hidden meaning.
