This is the second book in the "Young Wizards" series. While I would recommend to read them in order, it can be understood and enjoyed without having read the first one.

What I like in this book are the clear choices the heroes have to make, as well as reading about how they feel about making those choices (I am trying not to give away the plot here...) The interactions between friends and family here are definitely interesting. Well, I am not sure I can say anything else without giving a spoiler. It's a great book - with wizards, adventure, and not somewhere in fantasy world - here in USA. Enjoy!
