In this third book, luck is hard to come by for Lief, Barda and Jasmine.  They come upon a shop owned by a man named Tom, and buy some pretty cool things to take with them on their quest and are lucky enough to receive Muddlets, which are like horses with 3 legs, but unlucky enough to not heed Tom's advice about them.  This part of the book really bugged me.  They have been through plenty so far and Lief totally disregards the warnings he's given.  There is a lot of action in this book also, a city who has enough but keeps it from their people and whose laws are a bit wacky, a pretty tricky river, and alot of rats.  The things they bought from Tom help with many of these things but not everything.  The final battle is with something that I despise just a little more than rats.  I really am enjoying Emily Rodda's play on words, it seems in every book there is some sneaky or silly word-play that lightens the books up a bit.
