In this book Lief and Barda, and the now added Jasmine continue on to find the second gem for the Belt of Deltora. They have to go to the Lake of Tears and go through Thaegen's (witch) land. They run into more trouble, including a giant guarding a bridge they must use. They each have to answer a riddle to cross. This book also introduces a mute, a man from Ralad, who continues to play a part in their journey. My favorite part of this book had to be Nij and Doj and they weren't even the "big climax" part of the book. There are many side stories in this book. The story of Ralad, the people of D'or, Nij and Doj, Thaegen - it just really kept me more interested than the first book.
