Lief, Barda and Jasmine are now travelling to the Maze of the Beast to get the 6th gem for the belt.  Along the way they discover nasty Ol's - beings that can transform themselves into any other creature/person.  While fighting the Ol's, they meet Dain - who saves them but gets hurt in doing so.  They take Dain to a group of people who oppose the Shadow Lord and live in secret.  This is not an easy task however and when they get there they are still met with resistance from the people.  This is the first book where the threesome split up due to necessity and when they reunite, all is not what it seems.  They continue their journey however to try to defeat yet another creature monster and gain another gem.
