Book two of the Sphinx series continues with Demigods and Monsters. I was so excited to follow on with Hope’s journey––and I was so ready for more Athan. But I wasn’t anticipating Xan.

I was disappointed with Athan’s absence, and I didn’t like Xan at all … at first. But he grew on me … a lot, despite the fact that neither I nor Hope trusted him. It’s not often that I’m so completely wrong with where a book is going. But every time I thought I knew what was about to happen, I was wrong. I love that.

Wagner does an amazing job of weaving threads of ancient mythology throughout Hope’s contemporary world. Grown up fans of Percy Jackson and Greek Mythology will love this contemporary series.

As Hope continues to investigate the mysteries around her curse, she feels at a loss of where to turn for answers. But she never stops searching. She never stops moving forward. Hope is such an admirable and believable protagonist. She acts her age, but she has a good head on her shoulders. She reacts with just the right amount of emotion when her efforts fail. She’s a girl with normal teenage issues and worries, but she’s also a strong and determined girl. An excellent role-model for young readers.

Readers who enjoyed Curse of the Sphinx will be even more captivated by Demigods and Monsters. Hope’s story just keeps getting better and better. I eagerly await the third book, Myths of Immortality, as Hope will travel to the Underworld to gain the knowledge she needs to break Apollo’s curse.
