The last book in the Echo Company series, "Stand Down" turns the focus back to Mike, whose war experiences have left him a mental/ emotional mess. He's also trying to deal with his feelings for Rebecca, the nurse his squad rescued, who decidely does not want a relationship with him. As the squad heads for some R&R near the hospital where Rebecca is stationed, Mike takes a gamble and an unusual romance begins.

This is not your typical teen romance-- it's much better! Emerson's attention to the details of war and her development of the characters of Mike and Rebecca are superb. The final chapters, as Mike tries to romance Rebecca Vietnam-style, are both hilarious and bittersweet.

This is the last book in the Echo Company series, which ends far too soon. However, there is a sequel, "The Road Home" by Ellen Emerson White (Zack Emerson's pen name), which wraps up the Rebecca/ Mike relationship.
