Early Seventeenth-Century Rome
For as long as she can remember, Carmela Tofana has desperately wanted one thing: to be allowed behind the counter of her mother’s apothecary in Campo Marzio, Rome. When she turns sixteen, she’s finally allowed into the inner sanctum: the workroom where her mother, Giulia Tofana, and two assistants craft renowned remedies for their customers. But for every sweet-smelling flower extract in the workroom, there’s another potion requiring darker ingredients. And then there’s Aqua Tofana, the apothecary’s remedy of last resort for husbands who are just as deadly as any disease. In all Carmela’s years of wishing to follow in her mother’s footsteps, she never realized one tiny vial could be the death of them all.

Beautifully written historical of a seventeenth-century apothecary in Rome and those who risk everything to help those in need.

What worked: I loved this powerful story of sixteen-year-old Carmela Tofana and the apothecary where she works with her mother and other women. Carmela loves working in the apothecary and wants to know more about the potions her mother makes for women who come to the shop. Even though the apothecary is well-known for its love potions, there's another more deadly potion. This potion is spoken of in secrets and one that if discovered will lead to their execution.

Great pacing and I loved how the author weaves in poetry from different POVs during the time. The poetry strengthens the story and gives readers a glimpse into some of the customers at the shop. We see their motivations, fears, and even doubts.

One main character is the apothecary. Readers learn what's in the potions, including a surprising 'secret' ingredient in the love potion that gives users a special glow.

Carmela is impatient to learn more about the secret ingredient in the mysterious La Tofana. She also wants more responsibilities that come along with the shop. Her mother comes across as hard at first but readers see that she doesn't share the secret to protect Carmela from the deadly consequences if things go wrong.

The relationship between Carmela and Violeta is complex. It's more of an enemy to reluctant friends. Carmela's mother helps Violeta when no one else will. There still is reluctance between the two and it doesn't help that Violeta's mother considers the women in the apothecary 'witches'.

In the seventeenth century, there was a real fear of being accused of being a witch. In the author's notes, she lists the challenges women who made tonics and used healing herbs faced at the time. Some of the characters were based on real characters. It made me curious to look up their stories which showed very courageous women for their times.

Mesmerizing historical of a Renaissance apothecary and not only the secrets but the women who risked everything to help those that others turn away.
