Jess Martinez has photography on the brain. She’s a few great shots away from the perfect college application, and her escape from her controlling father and life on a military base. Things at home have been rotten ever since her mom died; Jess and her dad can’t seem to connect. He thinks her passion for photography is a waste of time.

When a mysterious explosion happens practically in their backyard, Major Martinez orders his daughter to stay locked up inside the house–but Jess has other ideas. She’s not about to let the photo shoot of the century escape her lens.

Out in the woods, Jess finds more than she bargained for when she encounters a teenage boy named David. Sure, he’s especially drool-worthy, but is David the stuff of Jess’s dreams…or her nightmares?

I found Fire in the Woods to be an extremely fun read. I loved how focused Jess is on taking charge of her future. She’s definitely a girl with a plan, even though sometimes her plans don’t work out that well. And hello, #WeNeedDiverseBooks, what an awesome Latina main character!

P.S. I can’t wait to read the sequel, ASHES IN THE SKY.
