X-Men meets Spy Kids in the seventh and final installment of The Forgotten Five middle-grade fantasy/adventure series by the New York Times bestselling author of The Unwanteds.

Estero is in an uproar following corrupt President Fuerte's most brazen move yet in his quest to stay in power: his election night ploy, with the help of his superpowered henchman Hector, to hypnotize the country into believing that he—and not Magdalia Palacio, the rightful winner—received more votes. Luckily, Cabot escapes Hector's trance and uses her own mind-controlling ability to help her team of supers see the truth about the stolen election; together they begin the process of slowly un-brainwashing the citizenry.

When the president and Hector launch another attack, it becomes clear they won't go away quietly. With the inauguration looming, the Forgotten Five and their allies will need to undertake a daring raid on the presidential palace that requires all of their smarts and supernatural abilities to execute, and go face to face with a super more dangerous than any they've fought before. Can they knock Hector and Fuerte out of commission, ensure Magdalia takes power, and make Estero safe for its supernatural citizens, once and for all?

Forever Rogue is the seventh and last book in the Forgotten Five series. It has something for every fan. The action is nonstop in the first part of the book. Each member plays an important role in stopping President Fuerte from using a mind-controlling super named Hecter to steal the election and make himself the one in power forever. The idea of a corrupt official who doesn't care who is hurt as long as they keep power in this made-up scenario makes for a perfect discussion of real-life news events.
It was nice in the other books that the parents tried to seek redemption and a relationship with their child. We see that again, as Cabot must decide if her parents are worth her time to try to heal their relationship. All that is nice in a fictional story, but what gives this story a bit of realistic grit is that Martim doesn’t suddenly want to be good. He continues to act selfishly, and his relationship is likely beyond repair, so his outcome is satisfying.
I am not sure what I envisioned for the end of the series, but the decision to return to the island wasn’t expected. Only in the last minutes of the book, as they sit around the campfire and recount their history, does it feel right and bittersweet.
I used an audiobook for this story. The narrator does a nice job bringing the story to life and makes it easy to follow what is happening with so many characters involved. Overall, this is a great Middle-Grade series with themes of superhero abilities, found family, coming of age, justice, redemption, and emotional health that make it feel well-balanced between realistic and a superhero story.
