Maxwell is a big kid, he is really tall and rather large. He also has learning disabilities. Kevin "Freak" is a small kid, with a walking disability, who is also very smart. This unlikely pair make a great friendship. They learn to lean and trust each other. Kevin rides on Maxwell's shoulders to feel tall, whole Kevin treats Maxwell with care, like a human being.


This book was really touching. We had to read it in fifth grade. I have mixed feelings about the ending though. In some ways it's sad, but the way in which is sad is kind of also settling. It's hard to explain unless I just give it away, or unless someone has actually read the book.
