Revenge meets the Gilded Age in this thrilling YA fantasy set among the glittering magical elite of late-1800s New York society, from Revelle author Lyssa Mia Smith.
Two girls attended a magical ball, but one was never seen again.
At least that’s what those who betrayed her believed.
Two years after being framed for fraud by the Society of the Charmed, an exclusive club of New York’s wealthiest—and most magical—citizens, Emmy Vallillo wastes away in prison, utterly alone.

Until her cell door bursts open, revealing Jack Fontaine, one of the Society’s favorite sons, now imprisoned for a crime he swears he didn’t commit. They make a deal: He’ll help Emmy escape if she helps destroy those who’ve wronged them.

Together, the two break free and, using Emmy’s magic to transform their appearances, they soon become the Society’s new darlings.Now their enemies want to dine with them. Attend lavish balls with them. Marry them. But ruining lives requires Emmy to trust Jack with hers, despite his dark secrets—and the infuriating attraction between them.

When another betrayal brings their enemies to their doorstep, Emmy must choose: finish exacting revenge, or give up the money, the magic, and her safety in this cutthroat world for the most treacherous thing of all—love.

I picked up Gilded in Vengeance by Lyssa Mia Smith, thinking I’d get a glamorous fantasy with a touch of drama… and instead I got something darker, sharper, and way more emotionally intense than I expected.
And honestly? I loved that.

From the very first chapters, this book doesn’t hold back. Emmy’s life doesn’t just fall apart—it’s ripped apart. Betrayed by someone she trusted, stripped of everything, and thrown into a situation where survival is the only option, her story immediately pulls you in with this raw, aching sense of injustice.
What really stuck with me is how personal her motivation feels. This isn’t vague, distant revenge. It’s targeted. Emotional. Fueled by grief, anger, and the kind of betrayal that lingers long after the moment itself. You understand exactly why Emmy becomes who she does—and why she refuses to let it go.

The setting is one of my favorite parts. It’s all glittering wealth, elegant parties, and powerful magic woven into high society—but beneath that shine is something much uglier. There’s this constant tension between appearance and reality, and the story leans into it so well. The world feels beautiful, but never safe.

Emmy as a main character really worked for me. She’s not overly polished or traditionally “likable,” and that’s exactly the point. She’s angry. She’s driven. She makes choices that aren’t always clean or easy to root for—but they make sense. Her growth isn’t about becoming softer; it’s about becoming stronger, sharper, and more in control.
I always appreciate a character who doesn’t just heal—she adapts.

The romance is there, but it never takes over the story, which I appreciated. It’s more about tension and trust than big sweeping moments. There’s a constant push and pull, and it fits the tone of the book really well. Nothing comes easy, especially not connection.

If I had one small critique, it’s that the pacing can feel a little uneven at times. Some parts move quickly, while others slow down more than I wanted—but even then, I never felt bored. I was too invested in seeing how everything would unfold.

Final Thoughts
Gilded in Vengeance is a story about what happens when someone refuses to stay broken. It’s messy, emotional, and filled with quiet intensity rather than constant action.
If you like:
* revenge-driven stories
* morally gray characters
* glittering worlds with dark undercurrents
This one is definitely worth picking up.

Dark, glittering, and emotionally charged—this is the kind of revenge story that lingers, even after the final page.
