About the Book: Anne: The Chapter Book Collection

The charming and spirited Anne Shirley stars in an early illustrated chapter book series inspired by her adventures in Anne of Green Gables — now with all six paperback volumes collected in one box set!

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert need help on their farm, so they’ve adopted what they hope will be a sturdy, helpful boy. Instead, Matthew finds Anne awaiting him at the train station — imaginative, brash, redheaded Anne-with-an-e. With her place at the Cuthberts’ at risk, Anne will have to learn patience, understanding and what it takes to make Green Gables her true home. Lovingly adapted by Kallie George with beautiful nostalgic illustrations by Abigail Halpin, this series is perfect for fans of Anne, new and old.

This box set includes:

Anne Arrives: Anne isn’t quite what the Cuthberts expected, and she sets out to prove she belongs at Green Gables.

Anne’s Kindred Spirits: Anne meets Diana, her first friend . . . and Marilla’s brooch goes missing!

Anne’s School Days: Anne is enjoying her first few weeks of school, but new student Gilbert Blythe isn’t making things easy.

Anne’s Tragical Tea Party: Things go wrong at Anne’s first tea party, and Diana ends up sick.

Anne Dares: Anne undertakes some fearful tasks — a mean-spirited dare from Josie Pye followed by a starring role in the Christmas recital.

Anne Dreams: Anne is starting to grow up as she goes from dreaming to making plans.

~Guest Post by Kallie George~

Anne of Green Gables has been part of my life since I was a young child. I have always loved L.M. Montgomery’s books and especially her character Anne Shirley. Anne always felt like a kindred spirit to me–she has a wild imagination, and a powerful love of nature and stories. And she makes lots of mistakes but finds a way to move through them with humor and heart.

When I was approached to see if I’d like to try and adapt the series for younger readers, I was intimidated. The original books are so beautifully written, and I wasn’t sure if I could possibly capture them in a way that did them justice. It took me a while to decide to take on the project, but I am glad that I did. I’ve so enjoyed deep diving into Montgomery’s beautiful stories.
Since the goal was to retell the first book in the series, Anne of Green Gables, for younger readers, so that they are introduced to Anne and read the original when they are older, I wanted to try and stay as true as possible to the plot and characters. I tried my best to capture the feeling of them, the vivacity of the characters, while simplifying the wording and storyline.
My method of adapting wasn’t fancy! I read L.M. Montgomery’s book so many times that the story was embedded in my mind. Then I tried to see how the plot broke down into different smaller stories. One nice thing about many older books is that the chapters often stand alone; they each have a short story within them. I did a small amount of rearranging, so that each early chapter book can stand on its own.
My Anne of Green Gables copy is well-worn with use. No matter how many times I read it, I still find new things to delight over! L.M. Montgomery’s language is so beautifully and carefully constructed. I had such a wonderful time creating the adaptations, and I hope the chapter books introduce many more readers to Anne, whose spunk and strength, passionate embrace of the world, and unique personality are needed today more than ever.
