What I liked best about Heartbreak River is the writing style and how it gives a sense of mystery in each chapter. The writing style is breathtaking - it leaves us hanging off the edge of the seat, waiting to see what happens between Sean and Alex. It gives a sense of mystery in each chapter when Tricia, the author, writes a little about what exactly happened last year in Alex's father's death and about why she feels so guilty.
I felt that the two main characters, Alex and Sean, had very strong personalities. Alex, because she was able to go on with her life - though not very well - and Sean, because he forgave her. Though their relationship could definitely have developed more, it was still really good and a lot of the scenes they had together were really believable and realistic.
The saddest part of the book was the tragedy that had to occur before Alex understood what Sean had done for her. Though it made the book even better, the good half of me wished that the tragedy didn't occur just because I didn't want Alex or Sean or anyone to suffer anymore then they needed to.
It had a very bittersweet ending but because those are my favorites, I loved it - and cried for Alex and Sean. I highly recommend this book because...it's beautiful. Just beautiful. I remember being in this hyperawareness mode while I was reading it. It just goes to show how good the book is.
Heartbreak River made me cry. Not because it's bad or anything but because it's so sad.
