Homeless Bird

Koly, you are thirteen and growing everyday,Maa said to me. Its time for you to have a husband. Homeless Bird ,the fiction Indian book is about a young thirteen year old girl named Koly. Who has to get married to a boy or man she doesnt even know. On the day she is to get married she figures out that her husband is younger than her. After she is wed she finds out that her new husband is very sick and could die. Her new mother- in- law ,sass and father -in-law ,sassur let their son,Hari marry young because they needed the money so they could take Hari to the Ganges and hope that it would cure him. They went to Varanasi to cure his sickness. But it didnt help so Hari died in the city of Varanasi. Soon Kolys sister- in-law gets married and long after that kolys sassur dies. Koly then is left with her evil sass, who takes her to a city of widows called Vrindavan. Koly never finds her sass so she stays there. A very nice rickshaw boy brings her to a widows house. There she meets Maa Kamala the owner of the widows house. Maa Kamala helps Koly find a job. There at the widows house Koly meets lots of friends. The rickshaw boy named Raji comes to the house and eats then Koly reads her book of Tagores poems and she asks Raji if he would like to learn how to read and write. Raji tells Koly about his farm and how one day when he has enough money he would go back and get married and work at his farm. Then weeks later Raji tells Koly that he has enough money to go home to his farm and wants Koly to come with him. So Koly agrees and they live happily ever after.
I would recommend this book for those who like books with lots of drama. If you like third person books than this is definently the book for you. this book is definently a page turner. The hook really grabbed me I could not let the book down. The book was very understanding it wasnt complicated at all. Homeless bird reminded me of Cinderella because sass was like the evil step mother. Raji was like the prince. The theme in the story is kindness. koly was very kind by giving her breakfast to the little girl on the street. Raji helped Koly find a home in the city. Another theme is bravery. Koly stood up to her sass and didnt give up her mothers silver earrings. The plot was very detailed. Gloria Whelan used lots of facts about India in the story Homless Bird.
I think this book is a great book with lots of interesting facts and details.I enjoyed reading this book because of its third person dialog. I think everyone should read this book because it has a lot of similes, metaphors, and personification which made the book more interesting. this book is great for people who like to get into the action right away. This is the kind of book for adventurous people.
