House of Hearts is perfect for the spooky season. I used an audiobook for this story and the narrator does a fantastic job keeping the reader’s interest and being easy to follow along.
I liked the author's approach to the main character, Violet Harper, finding out that ghosts do haunt the elite boarding school’s campus. The fact that she starts skeptical and then can’t deny what is happening hits just the right note of believability to bring the reader along for what occurs next.
Violet enrolled in the boarding school with an agenda to infiltrate the secret society and find out who murdered her best friend, Emory, the previous school year. I like that it is discovered early on why she is there and that the purpose of the secret society is revealed, so we can get into the grit of the supernatural curse plaguing the heirs of the school.
The forbidden romance has a good start with Violet and Calvin having snarky arguments. There could have been a bit more yearning or interactions before they admitted feelings, but it is a standalone, so things needed to keep moving along.
Overall, this has just the right amount of spookiness if you don’t like reading scary books. The romance is a fun focus of the book, and how it is incorporated into the curse. The action is well-paced and plentiful, making for a quick read. This is my first time reading a book by this author, but I will keep her in mind for future books.
