Melkorka is a 15 year old Irish Princess living in Eire (Ireland) in 900 AD Due to a family accident, she and her sister Bridget are sent away for their safety. While on their journey, they are kidnapped by Viking slave traders. Melkorka refuses to speak, and is thought to be more than she seems by the Leader of the Vikings. This protects her, for a while, from some of the degrading and violent treatment of the Vikings towards their slaves. Bridget eventually escapes, and Melkorka is sold to an Icelandic trader.
This was a well-written book, with very realistic descriptions of the place and the time. The descriptions of the things that happen to Melkorka and her fellow slaves are much too graphic for younger readers. (Id recommend 9th grade and up) Although, I liked this book, I felt a little unhappy with the ending. I wanted to know (and I wanted Melkorka to know) what had happened to her family and Bridget.
