YABC: What inspired you to begin the Curious Bunny Series?

The inspiration for Boomer sprang from a blend of art and real life. An artist friend shared a tiny painting of a majestic tree with a curious white rabbit nestled beside it, and I found myself captivated by the scene—almost as if I could step inside that peaceful world. Around the same time, my grandson’s endless curiosity reminded me how children view everything with wonder. One night, I woke up suddenly, and the idea for a bunny with a curious mind appeared. My grandson helped me choose the name “Boomer,” making the character even more meaningful to our family.

YABC:  You write for several age groups. Do you have a favorite demographic?

Writing for children is where I feel most at home. My years spent teaching preschool through fourth grade, and later training older students in technology, helped me understand how young minds tick and how they process the world. That background brings authentic perspective to my stories. While I’m proud of my young adult historical fiction, and plan to write more, I’m continually drawn to stories that spark curiosity and joy for younger readers.

YABC: Tell me about Boomer. What drives him to leave the country and explore the big city?

Boomer’s story begins with his fascination for the runners passing by his house each day. Their journeys made him wonder what adventures might be waiting beyond his familiar country home. Eventually, his curiosity grew so strong that he decided to follow the path and discover the world beyond, embarking on an adventure full of surprises and lessons.

YABC: When will we see the next installment of Boomer’s adventures?

Plum Creek Press is hard at work on two more exciting stories in the Boomer series! Readers won’t have to wait long to join Boomer on his next adventures.

YABC: What other age group would you consider writing for?

In addition to writing picture books and chapter books for children, I also write young adult historical fiction. Creating stories for different ages lets me meet readers at many stages of their reading journey, from early readers all the way up through teens discovering the power of history through story.

YABC: What daily thing do you see that brings you joy?

Each morning, I wake up and give thanks for the gift of a new day. I ask for chances to offer small acts of kindness that might bring a smile to someone’s face. When I’m out walking and sense that someone needs a blessing, I quietly say a little prayer for them as I pass by, and my heart fills with joy knowing I can share even a bit of the blessings I’ve been given.

YABC: What do you do when you procrastinate?

When I procrastinate, I might wander through the mall to window shop or escape into a movie for a little while. Then, almost suddenly, I feel that nudge that it is time to stop avoiding the work, sit back down, and get crackin’ on my story!

YABC: What is your favorite writing space or routine?

I have two favorite writing spaces. Early in the morning, I love to wake up, grab my computer, and write in bed before I do anything else, so I do not lose the ideas that came to me overnight. Later in the day, I retreat to a special room I call the “story garden,” filled with children’s and young adult books, family photos, and my grown children’s childhood writings and drawings, and when I curl up in my wingback chair surrounded by all that imagination, I am off and running into my stories.

YABC: Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

Yes—one very close to my heart is the Austin Woman’s Club in Austin, Texas. We help preserve a beautiful historic home, Chateau Bellevue, a French Romanesque chateau built in the 1870s, so visitors can experience a bit of the past and step back to a time when Texas was still a young state.

YABC: What’s up next for you?

I am working on a collection of short stories about beloved family dogs—from my own childhood, my children’s lives, and even friends’ pets. I am also writing a couple of new holiday adventures for Boomer the Curious Bunny, and I hope these stories will bring families lots of seasonal joy as they read together.

YABC: What’s a book you’ve recently read and loved?

I recently enjoyed Me & Patsy Kickin’ Up Dust by Loretta Lynn and her daughter Patsy Lynn Russell. It offers a warm, behind-the-scenes look at the deep friendship between country music legends Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline and celebrates loyalty, resilience, and women lifting one another up.
