This is a classic, a past Newbery winner. To a modern reader it may be a bit old-fashioned and slow (in the writing style)but it does make you imagine what it would be like to be stuck on an island with only your own ingenuity to rely on. At first Karana doesn't have any problem killing other animals like wild dogs and otters but at the end the animals become her friends.

When I read this book I realized it was the first,actual book that I could'nt stop reading.
It hypmotized me!!! I could'nt believe how much information I sucked into my brain about Indians. ( It was'nt like a boring non-fiction book). There is a great story line of how a girl is left behind on a island and has to survive on her own.
