Ninth grader Jason just wants to experience everything he thinks guys his age are supposed to be doing, but having Marceline as his girlfriend doesn't make it easy. As an intelligent, opinionated girl who could care less about popular trends, she's not about to let Jason make out with her just because all the other couples are doing it. Their relationship-- and ninth grade in general-- is slowly figured out by Jason over the course of the novel, which is told in wonderfully real first person. Jason and Marceline make a great couple because they're good friends, and know when to tell each other off.
