A Hilarious Twist on a Classic Fairy Tale
A Greedy Wolf follows a wolf that is so greedy that he eats enough food for ten birthday parties and still wants more. He goes on a search for dinner when he happens upon seven goats who have been left alone at home. Will these goats be able to avoid getting eaten? Do they have just enough tricks up their sleeves?
What I Liked: The first thing that stood out was the cover of this book and the silly image of the wolf. Upon reading the description of the book there is no waiting to continue reading the book to find out if the wolf will have his dinner or if these goats will manage to get away. This book instantly draws you in especially if you are a fan of other fairy tales that feature the big bad wolf and know how those end.
You don’t have to be familiar with the original Grimms’ fairy tale that this book is based on in order to enjoy it. The twist that comes near the end of the book will have you laughing as the goats have tricked this wolf into maybe becoming their next meal. There are other moments in which you will also be laughing such as when the goats are stuffing the wolf with all the meals that they have been preparing and insisting that he tries just a bit of each of their special dishes.
The art style of this book is silly and fun which complements the book’s humorous and unexpected twists. The exaggerated expressions on the character’s faces add to the comedic effect as the wolf’s over-the-top greed and the goats’ reactions are even more entertaining. There is a moment in which the artwork does go into creepy territory when the book takes a darkly humorous turn with the goats enjoying wolf meat. This only adds to the book’s charm, making that twist both surprising and amusing.
Final Verdict: A Greedy Wolf is a delightful and humorous spin on a Grimms’ fairy tale that will draw readers in with its playful take on the big bad wolf. This book keeps you engaged from the start as it builds anticipation as the goats cleverly turn the tables on their would-be predator. The comedic moments, especially the wolf’s growing discomfort as he can’t get to the goats, and then again as he indulges in the goats’ endless dishes add to this book’s charm. This book is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys fairy tale retellings that have a twist.
