About This Book:

An unforgettable picture book about the power of kindness and the importance of community.

As Holly takes her morning stroll in the thicket, she comes across a small bird. It was plain to see he’d been through some things. The bird is alone and trying to find shelter for the winter. And Holly knows exactly what to do to help.

Illustrating the transformative role a community can play in caring for its members, The Sweater is a powerful and poignant tale of compassion and acceptance.

lovely picture book about kindness

THE SWEATER is a sweet picture book about kindness and community. Holly finds a bird as she takes a walk in the fall. A bird who has been through some hard times has found its way into the thicket and hopped into the woodpecker’s old home. Holly gathers up small items from the other residents and makes a warm sweater to help the bird get through the winter. As all the animals hunker down, they feel the presence of their community and find themselves reunited as spring returns and the bird sings for them.

What I loved: This is an elegant and lovely story with poetic text that conveys the emotions well. The muted colors and details in the illustrations also capture the sentiments beautifully. The story flows gently and smoothly through the brief text and illustrations, flowing off the tongue.

The ultimate message here is one of kindness and helping others, and I love that everyone contributes a little as they are able to make things a little easier for the bird, who has already had some tough times. The lessons around generosity and kindness are great for young readers and will resonate well for readers of any age.

Final verdict: THE SWEATER is a lovely picture book about kindness, community, and helping others that will charm young readers.
