engaging picture book about courage and friendship

YOU CAN DO IT, BERT! is a simple picture book about courage and friendship. Bert is out on a limb, and it seems like he will do it (the reader is not sure what) – but then he gets a banana and doesn’t seem to be doing it. After his name is shouted, he is determined and jumps off the end of the branch. The reader soon sees that he splashed in the water next to his friends who are glad that he did it, just as he said he would. They all then go back up to the branch to do it again.

What I loved: This is a simple picture book that focuses on the story told through images. Light text appears next to Bert on the branch, and narrates the thoughts of his friends (as the reader later learns). The story captures the feeling of bravery and trying something new, especially with the pressure from others.

The story is easy to follow and will delight young readers as they can easily follow along what it happening. The ending is satisfying and brings it all together, with the surprise of swimming and friends that appear after the jump. Simple text and illustrations are all great for toddlers and preschoolers.

Final verdict: YOU CAN DO IT, BERT! is a simple picture book that ultimately portrays themes of friendship and bravery that will appeal to very young readers.
