Miriam’s Magical Creature Files #2: The Discovery of Dragons offers a lighthearted investigation into whether dragons are real. Miriam is an Orthodox Jew, and her religion is woven expertly into the larger plot that provides both positive representation and an invitation to others outside of the religion to become friends with this precocious character.
Miriam’s class is going to the zoo, and this is her chance to investigate. Her father is there as a parent chaperone. Her opinion swings wildly back and forth on whether she likes that he has come along. Generally, depending on whether things are going her way, which does provide humor to the story.
The illustrations, side notes, and charts add spunk and humor to the story. The larger font size and generous sprinkling of illustrations throughout make this beginning chapter book great for newly independent readers.
Overall, this book is perfect for fans of Junie B. Jones (Barbara Park), Ghoulia (Barbara Cantini), and Ava Lin (Tricia Seabolt). I enjoyed the humor and bright personality of Miriam. The premise is believable, and the Jewish culture was integrated seamlessly.
