Kids Review: Piggy (Ann Hood)

About This Book:

A heartwarming picture book about a beloved stuffed pig named Piggy, his human companion, and their friendship.

Piggy and his human have been inseparable since his human was a baby. As best friends, they do everything together: from sleeping to eating to playing. But as the years go by, and many washing machine baths later, Piggy goes from a plump, perky, and pink plush toy to a well-beloved, worn-in treasure.

From bestselling author Ann Hood and illustrated by Anna Quaranta, this charming picture book celebrates the everlasting friendship between human and stuffed animal.

Piggy was new, pink, plump, and perky when he was first introduced to his human as a baby. They’ve been inseparable ever since, but occasionally Piggy has to go through what he calls “a terrible thing,” meaning he had to get a shower. After so many showers Piggy is no longer plump, perky, and pink since he is now a well loved treasured toy.

What I Liked: This book is told through the perspective of Piggy which makes for a fun narrator for younger readers as it’s like their plushies are speaking to them. The idea of what goes through our stuffed animal’s minds as we play with them is engaging and exciting.

This book is perfect for younger readers as there are many pages in which there are no words, just fun, vibrant illustrations in which younger readers can help tell the story. The illustrations are sweet and simple, going along well with the text and helping to move the story forward.

Final Verdict: Piggy is a sweet, entertaining story that highlights the friendship between a human and their favorite stuffed animal. Children ages 4 and up will enjoy the fun adventures that Piggy goes on with his human and the silly moments in which he is being distraught over getting cleaned. Adults will enjoy reminiscing about their loved stuffed animals and also taking care of their children’s stuffed toys as they become well loved.
