Freddy is a skater sock who got caught in the spin cycle and gets transported into sock-verse. Unfortunately, Freddy isn’t too thrilled about this since he lost his perfect pair, Peter. Freddy stumbles upon Ruffles and Hanks, who go on a quest with him to find the gatekeeper of the sock-verse so that Freddy can get back to Peter. This isn’t a straightforward journey, though; there are plenty of twists and turns this unlikely trio will encounter. It’s through these challenges that this unlikely trio forms a lasting bond and discovers just what the Sock-Verse has in store for them.
What I Liked: This book does a grand job of introducing you to the perfect pair, Freddy and Peter, so that when they are separated, you feel bad for Freddy and understand his mission of getting back to Peter. The moment you are thrust into Sock-Verse, the illustrations are captivating and full of vibrant colors. Each new place in the Sock-Verse is full of wonder and reminiscent of a theme park combined with a playground.
The characters that you are introduced to throughout the book are intriguing, and it's fascinating to see all the personalities of various types of socks. Hank is a warm and fuzzy knee-high sock that isn’t too thrilled to be leaving his comfort zone but cares deeply about his friends. Ruffles is a frilly sock who means business, and she doesn’t buy into the idea that this gatekeeper really exists, but she’ll tag along because she cares about others deep down. It's funny to watch the mischief that these three get into because Freddy is impulsive and can’t keep from pulling levers and pushing buttons.
Final Verdict: Life Really Socks Vol 1 is a perfect start to a graphic novel series that tries to show you where socks go when they get lost in the wash. This graphic novel is ideal for fans of Adventure Time, SpongeBob, and Bee and Puppycat. Children ages 9 and up will enjoy being immersed in this new world and love uncovering new places within the Sock-Verse.
