A girl’s summer plans to get her crush to notice her are upended by a surprise guest in this entry in the new tween middle grade rom-com Spotlight Sprinkles series!

This is going to be the summer Julie finally catches the attention of her crush, James! She has the perfect outfits, ice-breaking jokes, and a list of places she can oh-so-casually run into him. At least that was the plan until Julie’s parents decided to surprise her by inviting a friend to their beach house for the next three weeks.

Honestly, Julie’s not even sure she would call Sophia a friend, but one thing is for sure: having to play nice with Sophia who is always hanging around was not on the agenda. Now, Julie has no idea how this summer is going to go—especially since she’s unexpectedly feeling flutters around a new friend, Liam…and she thinks he might like her, too.

Can Julie figure out how she feels about James and Liam? Or will having Sophia around ruin everything?

“Meet Me at Sunset” by Lee Heart is a breezy read following main character Julie as she creates “The Plan” as a means of meeting her ultimate crush, James, when she heads to the beach with her parents over the summer. Little does she expect that she’ll have someone else accompanying her, though, when her mother reveals a “surprise” about the trip—Julie’s quasi-friend Sophia is going to be joining them for three weeks while they’re away.

This throws Julie’s plan for a loop, and she isn’t sure if things will work out the way she expected anymore. She doesn’t want to let go of “The Plan,” so she decides that she’s going to take a risk and let Sophia in on it. The problem is that even though Sophia is on board, Julie is more often than not way too overzealous about it, making their trip about nothing more than her own desires. This causes tension between the girls at times, especially when they actually get to meet James and Sophia doesn’t think he’s all Julie has made him out to be.

Adding more frustration to the mix is James’ friend, Liam, who always seems to be around, even when Julie is trying to talk to James. Julie doesn’t want to say anything flat out, but she is upset that her well thought out plan isn’t working to her specifications. Little does she know that even though life certainly doesn’t always work out as expected, that doesn’t always have to be bad, even if it seems like no good can come of it in the first place.

This is a perfect summer beach read that lovers of contemporary romance, friendship, and angsty crushes will love.
