What I Loved:
I never expected to love a paranormal romance so much, but PROPHECY GIRL hits all the right notes. It's funny, swoony, and absolutely thrilling, and I couldn't bear to stop reading.
What makes the book for me is the heroine. Amelie Bennett is smart, brave, stubborn, and hilarious. She doesn't play by the rules (and has a disciplinary file the size of Texas), and while that gets her in some hot water, it's also one of her strengths. I love that she's loyal to those she loves, and that she refuses to give up even when the odds are so clearly stacked against her. I love that she goes after what she wants, and that she thinks outside the box (Girl is resourceful!). And I especially love her voice. She is funny, snarky, and full of sass, and not in that annoying "please stop trying so hard to be funny" way. Ms. White has a genuine comedic touch, and even in the midst of hair-raising suspense, I was laughing.
I also enjoyed the secondary cast of characters. (Especially Jack, the love interest whose swoon factor on a scale of one to ten is YES PLEASE.) The characters come vividly to life, complete with the little details that make them feel unique and *real* to the reader.
The world building is exceptionally strong. The reader is instantly immersed in the world of Guardians and Watchers, which comes with a history, a culture, glyphs and weapons and spells, and a world at war on a supernatural level. The author wove the details seamlessly into the fabric of the story without resorting to info dumps. I never felt lost, even though the plot is fast-paced and relentless.
Which brings me to my last point: the plot. The pace. The way I could. Not. Stop. Reading. The author gave me enough swoony (or snarky) down time in between breakneck action and edge-of-my-seat suspense that I was fully invested in Amelie, her romance, and her outcome. Every plot twist raises the stakes and hurtles the characters into more danger. And I loved that the end of the book is both satisfying and made me need Book 2 immediately, if not sooner.
What Left Me Wanting More:
Honestly, this was one of those perfect-for-me books. I'm super picky about paranormal romance, but this just hit all the right notes for me.
Final Verdict:
A fast-paced, hilarious thrill ride that will keep readers turning pages long into the night, PROPHECY GIRL is a must read.
