A young woman has just married Maxim de Winter, a widower, and moved to his estate in the English country-side. While they were gloriously happy on their honeymoon, at home tension starts to mount as the new bride feels she can never measure up to Maxim's first wife.

This book was very suspenseful in a slow burn kind of way. Du Maurier starts with the tension early on and never lets up until the end. I found it very easy to relate to the new Mrs. de Winter and her concerns about taking over a household from a beloved predecessor without a clue how to run an estate. There is a lot of scene setting in this book which allows the reader to easily envision the setting, which is very important to the plot. Highly recommended.
