Having read the His Dark Materials trilogy, I was expecting a touch of fantasy in this book. What I got, however, was a hearty dose of mystery. This tells the beginning of Sally Lockhart's story. Pullman's writing is as beautiful as ever, and the characters are well-developed. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially mystery lovers.
