This book is about a 12 year old girl named Casey who lives with her stepmother, Sylvia. One day, Sylvia disappears, leaving Casey to live on her own in her apartment. Casey has to hide her sadness and the fact that she is alone and without a parent. She needs a way to pay the rent and she gets help by a Paulie, a teenaged boy whose taken in by the apartment's landlord. Paulie gets her to do things to get money, such as stealing and lying, but this is the only way she can survive, without getting the attention of children's services. When Sylvia's dissapearance becomes noticeable, Casey needs real help, as she hopes for the return of her stepmom.
This book is exciting and is full of detail of how Casey feels and experiences things. You learn to see Casey as a strong girl with morales, but is still young and scared at the same time. You can;t wait to find out what happens next. It's a fast read and is emotional, as well. I recommend it for all teen girls, for it shows the "grit" one needs to survive alone in the world. And it teaches of when is the right time to say no or yes when necessary. A person needs to have the right to make thier own decisions, which is a struggle for Casey in this book. Read it!
