Scarlett is not as good as GWTW, but not as "bad" as Rhett Butler's People. The story starts after Melanie's death. Scarlett is pretty un-satisfied with her life and she does want Rhett back. She visits Tara for a while and then eventually goes to Rhett's mothers house to try to get Rhett back. Rhett is still taking care of Scarlett financially, and noone is in the know that they are split up. Scarlett stays there for a while and she also stays with her grandfather (her mother's father), who is overbearing and selfish. She meets some of her father's relation during this time and starts to visit them and enjoy their easier, simpler, happier life. She and Rhett come to an agreement that she can stay only a certain amount of time, then she must leave. She eventually leaves Rhett's mothers house to go to Ireland to see her dad's home country. She plants her roots there and hopes that Rhett will come find her. Scarlett matures in this book, but slowly, and we are given small insights on how Rhett feels about her. There were some boring parts that I felt dragged on forever, but there were also times where I didn't want to put the book down, I was so excited to see what happened next. The ending does put an end to the questions left by GWTW, but it still leaves the future open for intepretation by the reader. If you liked GWTW, this is a good, fun book to follow it up. If you don't expect Margaret Mitchell's flow and way with these characters, you will have more fun with the book.

This book is the best sequel ever! It almost (ALMOST tops the original)
Definitely not for young readers, this acclaimed sequel to the classic Gone With the Wind, is a superb piece of literature!
I loved it, beginning to end. Again, you follow Scarlett, but she has lost Rhett, the war has been over for some time, she has lost Melanie, and is forced to go to her family estate in Ireland to try to reclaim her husband!

First off I think publishing this book was horrible. Margaret Mitchell was very clear that she never wanted a sequel. She was the kind of person who could say "Rhett left Scarlett" and not think of all the what-ifs. Alexandra Ripley had to wait until Stephens Mitchell (Margaret's brother and executor of her estate) had died before she could publish it. If she loved gwtw so much then why did she do the one thing Margaret Mitchell would have hated? But anyway...the book itself. It's really not that good. It blows my mind that it got published in the first place. I think a good "tell" is that on the cover "The sequel to Gone With the Wind" is bigger then the title :)

After the abrupt, sudden ending of "Gone with the Wind", it was difficult to image what would have happened with Scarlett and Rhett after the story ended, in "Scarlett" many of the questions are answered, even though at times, in a quirky way. The faults of this book are that one: the characters do a complete 180 degrees turn of what they were before, and two: the writing style wasn't as dramatic and sweeping as Mitchelle's writing in "Gone With the Wind" was. Ignoring and tossing aside those faults, this is actually quite an interesting book, but of course, it won't be interesting if you haven't read "Gone With the Wind" yet.
