Skylar is convinced that life for her as an eleven-year-old is way harder than for any adult, including her cranky principal, Ms. Callus. The only good part about being eleven is being a massive K-pop fan, even if her parents do ban her from all things AZ8, the best K-pop boy band in the world. When a freak accident causes Skylar and Ms. Callus to switch bodies, Skylar finds herself trying to convince the world of AZ8’s supremacy, going viral in a K-pop dance video, and somehow running her school, all while stuck in a seventy-one-year-old’s body. And then she gets the chance to meet AZ8 in real life. With the help of her bestie, Dana, and her own wits and passion, Skylar must decide whether her K-pop dream come true is worth risking being stuck as an old lady forever. A feel-good tale singing with laugh-out-loud moments, Skylar and the K-Pop Principal is a joyful and uplifting story of friendship, fandom, and chasing your dreams.

As a long-time K-pop listener and being a member of many fandoms in my life I knew I would be in for a treat just by reading the title. Skylar and the K-Pop Principal take readers on a wild ride of laughs, music, and growing up. I thought the body swap concept was a great way to showcase the over-arching theme of a coming-of-age story even though there is a large age gap between the two main characters, Mrs. Callus and Skylar. Reading this novel will help readers understand that you are never too old to pursue your passions in life and not to take things for granted.
With most body swap stories, this novel is detailed in show how the characters must cope with experiencing life from a different perspective. Skylar and Mrs. Callus despise each other because of only seeing the negatives of their daily interactions. Through their accidental body swap, the author crafts a heartfelt story about empathy for others and personal growth. There are many positive life lessons throughout the story that the reader can take away from the story and use in their own life.
Most of all this story appeals to anyone who has ever been a fan of something and/or someone. From the outside looking in it may seem wacky to others, but Skylar’s deep appreciation for K-pop shows how the music creates a community and a way for people to express themselves. It features many fun K-pop fandom tidbits as well making it an easter egg hunt for any reader who is a fan.
This is such a fun, quirky, and lighthearted novel that I loved reading. The story and character’s wacky antics will put a smile on your face and make you laugh with each chapter. It’s a novel that is silly and doesn’t take it too seriously. Definitely a recommended read for a K-Pop fan.
