STEVE L. MCEVIL AND THE TWISTED SISTER is a delightfully humorous middle grade graphic novel. In this third (and sadly, final) installment, Steve and his friends are stranded in space, having been pulled through a wormhole. Their journey lands them on a planet with an alien who may be able to help them stop Perses from destroying Earth.

At the same time, Gramps is trying to convince Steve's sister, Eve, to help him save Steve and friends, as she's the only one who knows how to make a new portal device. Being a supervillain means she is not eager to help save someone - especially not her brother. However, if she does it, she might be able to rub it in Steve's face, so maybe there would be something in it for her after all...

What I loved: This is a humorous and clever graphic novel that weaves together a story in multiple places smoothly. We travel between Eve and Steve, getting the larger picture of what is happening in both places. The graphic novel is really well done and reads very easily, with speech bubbles easily attributable and the images telling the story well. Along those lines, the illustrations are full of color and detail with expressive characters, making them easy to follow and interpret. This is a gripping read that middle grade readers of all ages will enjoy.

The book handles themes of sibling rivalry, family, competitiveness, villainy/morality, and saving the world with plenty of humor and heart. Whatever the motivations are, the siblings are there for each other at the end of the day - even when they don't get along. Although they are supervillains, there is a bit of gray area in terms of level of villainy, and middle grade readers will appreciate this complexity.

The humor is also top notch for this age group, and the jokes land very well for middle grade senses of humor. It's quite a clever read with plenty of twists and turns and characters that are easy to like.

Final verdict: STEVE L. MCEVIL AND THE TWISTED SISTER is an engaging and hilarious graphic novel about saving the world, sibling rivalries, and modern supervillainy. Recommend for middle grade readers who enjoy complex themes and plenty of laughs!
