Sixteen year old Kit Corrigan leaves her family in Providence, Rhode Island for New York City. She plans to become a Broadway star. When she arrives, she doesn't have much, and she's broken off her tempestuous relationship with a boy named Billy, who's enlisted in the army. The city doesn't exactly welcome her with open arms. She gets a bit part as a chorus girl in a Broadway show, but she knows that's not going to last very long. She needs help-and then it comes, from an unexpected source. -Inside cover of Strings Attached
Kit is a very head strong girl who leaves her family in search of something bigger. When she arrives in New York she is faced with the life of a chorus girl with little money. Just when she thinks she can no longer take living in her current apartment, her ex-boyfriend's father shows up and offers her an extravagant apartment. But at what cost?
This book kept my heart pounding and my mind racing the entire time. I really loved the early 1950's setting and all the glitz that comes with that area.
I really enjoyed this book. Kit is very believable and I can imagine 100's of girls just like her. It would not be as common for a 16 year old to leave home for New York City today, but back in the 1950's, I'm sure it was more common. I really wanted Kit to take matters into her own hands, and was terrified for her when Billy's father, Nate Benedict came into her life. Nate is truly a scary character. I was afraid of him from the get go. Ms. Blundell does a wonderful job of portraying him as the scoundrel he is!
I adored Kit's siblings. I thought their characters were written really well and I loved them from the start. I also just want to throw in that my heart broke at the end...broke. I won't give anything away, but my jaw hit the floor.
I highly recommend this book. Very suspenseful, well written and a great read!
