Pauline, who is a spirited, passionate woman marries Michael, who is a responsible mama's boy. They meet as a war is starting when she comes into Michael's mom's store with a cut on her head from jumping off a street car/train. He is smitten with her at once and they spend alot of time together from that moment on. Michael enlists in the war, much to his mother's disapproval. He didn't really feel the need to, he just gets caught up in the moment. Pauline waits for him and when he returns, after no war experience, they marry. What follows is a story of the way the both see eachother and the knowledge that what drew them together, what they love about eachother, is also what drives them apart and makes them argue alot. They have 3 kids and some of the book is from their point of view. There is really not plot or huge point to this book, but at times it feels comfortable. It skips years, and narrarators, so you have to pay close attention. It's an okay book, and it tells alot about what real love is like and how hard it is to maintain.
