Wow. Mr. Shroud is extraordinary. The strength of personality infused into his characters along with a completely fresh plot make for a fascinating and compelling read.

Bits of history are hidden like jewels throughout Bartimaeus' narration, and this only gives more authenticity to Stroud's fantasy. I am sure many would balk at the use of annotation in fiction, but Stroud employs it flawlessly, connecting with readers and fully immersing them in this alternate world of magicians, politicians, rebels, and demons.
