The Color Purple is an acclaimed novel more targetted for teens and adults about a young African American woman during the 1950/1960's.
This story is set in diary format with the main character Celie experiencing things such as rape, discrimination, and degradation at a young age. She is even wed to some man who treats her terribly through abuse, verbal, physical and emotional.
This novel focuses on Celie's transformation as she gains confidence herself and learn how to fight back.
This is a book that you should just read. It gives a lot of insight on the Africam American experience and also has feminist issues in it. A great novel, but at times, might be confusing because of the language and some scenes were very adult.
