This one takes up where "The Gunslinger" left off and although I liked the first book, this one is by far better. We are introduced to new characters and they are characters you can understand more. Roland is injured and comes upon three doors in the sand on a beach. Each one opens into our world and onto a certain person in it. He draws one person from each door to help him on his quest to the Dark Tower. Every person has an dark issue they need to deal with. Eddie the junkie, Susannah has multiple personalities and the pusher, an extremely unlikeable character, who is not the intended "Drawee" from that door and will not be the one who comes through with Roland. This book and it's characters are complex in a good way. Their interaction with eachother at first is a great read and the book flows well with the Gunslinger and the books that follow.
