"A wickedly sharp adventure!" —ND Stevenson, New York Times bestselling creator of Nimona

The gothic worlds of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, and more collide in this graphic novel series about buried secrets, mad science, and misunderstood monsters. For fans of stylish reimaginings like Lore Olympus and gaslamp fantasies like The Night Circus!

London isn’t the safest place for mad scientists these days. After that whole ordeal with Frankenstein, angry mobs have gotten awfully good at hunting down monsters and wiping out anything they don’t understand. In fact, if it weren’t for one extraordinary young man, every out-of-the-box thinker would have been locked up . . . or worse.

That young man is none other than Dr. Henry Jekyll. He believes mad scientists would thrive if they could just fix their public image, which is why he founded the Society for Arcane Sciences, a place where like-minded eccentrics could come together to defy the laws of nature in peace.

But everything changes when a mysterious stranger arrives, bent on taking the Society in a radical new direction. With everyone turning against him, Jekyll’s life starts to spiral out of control, shattering all his carefully laid plans and threatening to expose his darkest secret—one that could destroy everything he has built from the inside out.

Volume One collects Chapters 1-7 of this thrilling, humorous, beloved webcomic, which is available in print for the first time ever. It also features a brand-new side story, a behind-the-scenes look at artwork, and more exclusive bonus content!

The Glass Scientists Volume 1 tells the tale of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who lives in London and founded the Society for Arcane Sciences, because he thinks that mad scientists would thrive if only their public image could be changed. London isn’t really safe for mad scientists, though. There was an ordeal with Frankenstein, and ever since, angry mobs chase monsters and take out things they don’t understand. Things change when someone comes in who wants to take the Society in a different direction, and everyone is turning against Dr. Jekyll. Due to all of this turmoil, Jekyll’s life is out of control, and his dark secret might be revealed to those around him.

What I Liked: This book is a fun retelling of the classic story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with several additional characters introduced. It’s fascinating to read as you get introduced to each of the characters living within the Society for Arcane Sciences, and learn more about what type of science each of them practices. The twist that gets added in this story is intriguing and makes you want to read more of this book and want more of the series. It’s great to see how things develop in this story for not just Dr. Jekyll but also Hyde, and the relationships that he has developed on his own that may get Dr. Jekyll into trouble.

The cover of this book instantly grabs your attention with its vibrant colors and elegant details highlighted for the characters. This art style continues throughout the book, and the illustrations pair nicely with the images. The layout is easy to follow along, and makes for smooth transitions between each chapter of this book. This printed version of the webcomic has a few additions at the end of the book, such as a side story, a behind-the-scenes look at the artwork, and more. These additions to the story are amazing and give you more insight into the graphic novel and its creator.

Final Verdict: The Glass Scientists Volume 1 will have you wanting more of the story and its characters throughout the whole book and long after you finish this volume. This book is perfect for fans of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, science, technology, and other popular monsters such as werewolves. Young adults ages 14 and up will enjoy following along as Dr. Jekyll tries to get out of the mischief that Mr. Hyde gets up to, and learning about the other characters that are living in the Society.
