This was the perfect ending to the trilogy and possibly the series as we once again go on an epic journey to save the NeverNever with Meghan Chase and her friends and family. As a longtime fan, I took this opportunity to reread every book to make sure I was ready for the maximum effect of the last book. That worked, but if you do not have enough time to do that, then the book does a good job of referring to past events as well.
I like the addition of Nyx and her story. She is the perfect match for the ever-rascally Robin Goodfellow and it is fun to see him finally meet his match and perfect balance. His character is the life of the story that is otherwise dark as the team travels into the long-forgotten Evenfey territory to stop the Nightmare King.
Kierran, the King of the Forgotten, is still seeking redemption for his betrayal in previous books. He was the perfect character for the role he takes in this story. I am surprised in all the books he has never been the narrator. If there is ever any more, I hope to see him take the first-person place in the story.
This book was told from Meghan’s perspective. Which did not feel different enough from Ash’s perspective in Iron Sword, and I kept having to remind myself who was the one thinking and narrating. It has been a while since Ash and Meghan were the main characters on the quest and it was a nostalgic feeling having it come back full circle to them.
Final Verdict: I liked the surprise reveal about the land of Evenfey and the dreaded Nightmare King and the resolution of this quest. This book is great for younger YA fans because the plot is easy enough to follow, there are high moral standards they stick to, and just when you think they are going to kill one of the main characters it backs off and they are saved, so it leaves you with a perfect satisfaction that your characters of Faerie are around if another book is made.
What Meghan and her group achieve feels like the ending of a series. Yet, in the end, we meet Ethan and Kenzie’s new child and so that leaves the reader with a hopeful feeling about the possibility of a future story. This series and book contain all the elements of a great love story and a faerie story. Kagawa is talented in bringing a vibrant world to life for our characters to explore and find unexplored facets of what a fey can look like.
