A 12-year-old girl learns of her magical destiny in Patrick Carman's first absorbing episode of the Land of Elyon trilogy. Originally self-published to local acclaim and now available on a national scale, Carman's The Dark Hills Divide introduces readers to Alexa Daley, who annually visits the town of Bridewell. Alexa is curious about what lies beyond the massive ramparts that surround the city and the walled roads that link Bridewell to nearby towns; soon after town leader Thomas Warvold passes away, Alexa finds herself outside the walls, acquires a stone with remarkable powers, and discovers that she's meant to stop a potential war from occurring. Fortunately, Alexa has a number of allies, including a fierce wolf named Darius, and after she uses her smarts to prevent a ruthless convict from gaining power, the storm facing Bridewell is calmed, with a hint of what's to come in Book 2. Fantasy buffs looking for more in the vein of Cornelia Funke and Flavia Bujour's The Prophecy of the Stones will find Alexa Daley to be a stellar new heroine. Told from Alexa's matter-of-fact point of view, Carman's first book is one to savor, sewing together an involved yet non-intimidating plotline, fascinating characters, and strong cliff-hangers to deliver a series debut that will surely entertain boys and girls, young and old.

The story takes place in the little town of Bridwell. The lead character, Alexa, has a big mystery to uncover. She encounters interesting characters thoughout the story. My favorite part in the story is the little man she meets up with to guide her on her adventure, Yipes. He is not your ordinary little man as the reader finds out. I liked the idea of the magic stone she collected that gave her the ability to hear the animals speak. That was so great. The animals that helped her along the way, Renny lodge, where she stayed full of secret passages, Murphy, a squirrel and Alexa's sidekick, all kept me on the edge of my seat. The urgency for Alexa to uncover the mystery that threatens Bridewell and how she figures out the clues keeps me interested and eager for her to succeed.

Alexa is a headstrong girl who loves reading about adventures in the library. She longs to explore outside of the huge walls that "protect" the city. One day she stumbles upon an adventure that calls for her to use all of her wits and abilities for the good of the Land of Elyon itself.

This book was full of fun, humor, and charm. The characters are unique and lovable. This genuine fantasy novel is an awesome read. Some parts are slow, but the great plot makes up for it.

Welcome to the land of Elyon, were the people build walls around thier cities and roads to protect them from an unknown evil that lies in the wilderness of Elyon.

Twelve-year-old Alexa Daley has always yearned for adventure and felt like a prisoner trapped behind thier towns walls. Alexa and her father travel from their hometown of lathbury to bridewell for the summer, as they do every year so her father(the mayor of lathbury)can attend meetings with other important people in bridewell.

Soon everything changes with the death of warvold,(mayor of bridewell and the man responsible for the wall being built) whom Alexa takes a mysterious silver key from on the night of his death. Soon after she discovers a secret underground passage in the library that she unlocks with the siler key, that leads beyond the towns walls into the wilderness of Elyon. Once through the passage she meets a two-foot tall man named Yipes. Yipes leads her to a srange pool of water were she attains a green glowing stone that allows her to talk to animals, but she will lose her power forever if she ever leaves the wilderness. Yipes than takes her to a large but friendly wolf named darius who has been separated from his family on the other side of the wall. she than learns of an evil plan of the convicts that are hiding in the Dark Hills. Alexa than meets a bear that is the king of the forest, she learns that their is a traitor living among them that goes by the secret name sebastian that is in charge of the convicts, and that the creator of Elyon, a man named Elyon has disappeared. She must find sebastian, reveal him and stop the convicts. Can she do it and save all that she loves in time?

This is an imaginative and well written book that has some twists and turns that will keep its readers on thier toes. It is a good begining to the series. I enjoyed it and think many fantasy lovers will like it to.

I recommend that people should read this book because its about a girl named Alexa Daley lives in a land where the people are afraid, so afraid that they've built a wall around their city. Moreover, the roads themselves are walled, so that travelers can go from one town to another without ever seeing the countryside. This is the land of Elyon, where stones are set against an unseen and unknown evil that lurks in the dark forests of the distant hills. Alexa has seen these hills; as the daughter of a leader of Lathbury, she makes the yearly journey to Bridewell, where her father and others convene to discuss matters of import.
Their meeting place is an ancient prison which has been converted to a city hall of sorts, with an extensive library that Alexa loves, and from its tallest towers she can look out on the mysterious countryside which has haunted her from her earliest memories. I loved this book because its hard to put down suspenseful and very vivid in detail. I would suggest this book to whoever likes suspenseful, mysterious and fantasy books! I thought this was a very good adventure and I'd recommend it fantasy lovers.
