Monstrous Classics Collection: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories contains pieces from both The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon and Tales of a Traveller: Strange Stories by a Nervous Gentleman. This includes The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, in which Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher, is trying to win over local heiress Katrina Van Tassel. Unfortunately for him, one of her other suitors, “Brom Bones,” makes Ichabod the target of his practical jokes. Brom tells the story of the Headless Horseman one night, and when Ichabod leaves that party, he seems to be pursued by a cloaked rider. Is this the Headless Horseman that Brom was talking about? Will Ichabod be able to escape this man? Another story in this book is Rip Van Winkle, in which a man falls asleep for twenty years and wakes to find that nothing is the same.
What I liked: This book opens with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which will instantly grab your attention if you are a fan of classic literature or are already familiar with Sleepy Hollow and are looking for the original tale. This book contains a lot of variety with the stories that are in it, both in terms of content as well as the length of the stories. This book also allows you to skip around, so you don’t have to read any of the stories in order. This is a great book to read aloud with a high school class during the fall season, as it has scary elements, but nothing that would be too much for that age range. Each story will have you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what comes next and how our protagonist will proceed with the situations they are in.
Final Verdict: The Monstrous Classics Collection: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories is an excellent choice for those who enjoy classic literature. People who are fans of Edgar Allen Poe, and other scary classics, such as Dracula and Frankenstein, will enjoy this book. This book immerses you into various stories that you’ll lose track of time, and every sound around you will make you think that the stories have suddenly come alive.
