The Mirror of Beasts is the conclusion to the Silver in Bone duology. It does a great job of holding the reader’s interest for such a long book. Although we expect things to work out in the end, it does not follow a predictable path to get there.
This author continues to defy expectations. With the conclusion of the last book, I expected Tamsin and her friends to chase and fight the Children of the Night, and to have more clashes with the Lord of Death. However, they allowed him free rein of destruction while they were off chasing leads to find a way to stop him.
There were resurrected characters, ghosts, and unexpected deaths that worked within the framework of established magic, but occasionally played fast and loose with credibility. The clash between Tamsin and Emrys was satisfying, and I enjoyed the strong support her friends gave in being upset with him as well.
Neve and Tamsin had great reveals about their pasts. Neve is given an opening for a companion novel in the future if the author chooses to stay in this world. Overall, the action was steady, the romance was satisfying, and the conclusion was well-executed, providing closure to this epic fantasy.
