You HAVE to listen to the audiobook!!!
This book stole my heart.
Elizabeth Acevedo is an incredible writer and poet. Listening to the audiobook was definitely the right decision because hearing her speak was just amazing. I don't think it would have had the same impact on me if I had merely read it myself. Acevedo embodies Xiomara in a way that you just can't capture by yourself. Her poems are powerful on their own, but hearing her recite them is an entirely different experience and it honestly made this book that much better.
I honestly don't know what to say about this book because it was just so incredible that I can't really form words to describe it-at least, not words that do justice to it. Acevedo writes poems that touch your soul and speak to parts of you that you didn't even know existed. I wanted to curl up in her words. I can't wait to read more from her. She has such a unique voice and I want to tell so many people to read this book.
Xiomara is such a strong and wonderful protagonist. I want to be her when I grow up. I love how she stood up for herself. I also loved watching her journey. I loved seeing her confidence in herself and her poetry bloom.
I loved the other characters as well. Everyone was so well developed and it was so fascinating seeing Xiomara's interactions with different people because of how it changed who she was.
Honestly I don't know what else to say except that you should listen to this audiobook. You won't regret it.
