The Stolen Throne sees our favorite characters facing major obstacles and is a necessarily darker addition to the trilogy. This book follows some predictable paths with Reven and Meren feeling angst about their relationship and staying apart even though it is painful all for the good of everyone. This makes Cain think he can gain her hand in marriage which strains their friendship and adds strife since he must work closely with Reven.
Tabra is close to death so Meren works to find a way to cure her. They learn that the goddesses are trapped in amulets and they are racing against time to find them all before King Eidolon gets them. They are unsure whether they should set the goddesses free because they don’t know why they would have been trapped. With the king's troops constantly on their trail and surprise betrayals, this is an action-packed plot with few resolutions that sets the third book up to be exciting.
The angst between Reven and Meren gets a bit tedious since we know they are meant for each other on an epic level. When they finally decide that they are meant to be together there is a smoking hot scene making this best suited for mature audiences. Their relationship advancement leads to a few surprises during the big showdown where we will have to go to the third book to fully understand the repercussions of their actions.
Overall, this story is another strong addition to the trilogy. This book is a bit darker and steamier in places. Reven and Meren are growing as characters and more capable of facing the challenges ahead. There is a lot of promise that the third book will be action-packed, fast-paced, and satisfying.
